Columbia is a town in Marion County, Alabama, United States. It is located along the Tombigbee River in the western part of the state, about 45 miles northwest of Tuscaloosa. As of the 2010 census, the population of Columbia was 1,091. The town was founded in 1820 and was named for Christopher Columbus. It was incorporated in 1821. Columbia was the site of the first county seat of Marion County, but the county seat was moved to Hamilton in 1868. Columbia is home to several historical landmarks, including the Old Courthouse Museum, which was built in 1855 and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The museum contains exhibits on the history of Marion County and the surrounding area. The town is also home to the University of North Alabama, which is located about 10 miles southwest of Columbia. The university is a four-year public institution that was founded in 1830 and is the oldest state-supported institution of higher learning in Alabama. In addition to its historical and educational attractions, Columbia is also a popular destination for outdoor recreation. The Tombigbee River and nearby Pickwick Lake offer opportunities for fishing, boating, and other water activities. The Bankhead National Forest, which is located about 20 miles east of Columbia, offers hiking, camping, and other outdoor activities.
