Clayton is a town in Barbour County, Alabama, United States. It is the county seat of Barbour County. According to the 2010 census, the population of Clayton was 2,019. The town was founded in 1877 and named for Judge Augustus H. Clayton, a prominent lawyer and jurist in the area. It is located in southeastern Alabama, about 60 miles northwest of Dothan and about 60 miles southeast of Montgomery. Clayton is the home of the Barbour County Courthouse, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The courthouse, built in 1891, is an example of Victorian Romanesque architecture and features a clock tower. The town is home to several churches, including the First Baptist Church and the First United Methodist Church. The town also has a public library and a volunteer fire department. Clayton is located in a predominantly agricultural area, with timber and poultry farming being the main industries. The town is also home to a number of small businesses, including retail stores, restaurants, and professional services. In recent years, Clayton has experienced some growth, with new development and construction in the area. The town is located near several recreational areas, including the Eufaula National Wildlife Refuge and the Chattahoochee River, which offer opportunities for hunting, fishing, and other outdoor activities.
