Clay is a city in Jefferson County, Alabama, United States. It is a suburb of Birmingham and part of the Birmingham-Hoover Metropolitan Statistical Area. The city was founded in the late 19th century and was named for the local red clay soil. Clay has a population of approximately 21,000 people. The city is located in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains and is known for its rolling hills and wooded areas. The downtown area is home to a number of small businesses and restaurants, as well as a community center and several parks. Clay is served by the Clay-Chalkville School District, which includes Clay-Chalkville High School. The city is also home to the Alabama Fire College and the Alabama School of Fine Arts.
