Clay is a city in Jefferson County, Alabama, United States. It is a suburb of Birmingham and part of the Birmingham-Hoover Metropolitan Statistical Area. The city was founded in the late 19th century and was named for the local red clay soil. Clay has a population of approximately 21,000 people. The city is located in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains and is known for its rolling hills and wooded areas.
