Clanton is a city in Chilton County, Alabama, United States. It is the county seat of Chilton County, and it is located in the central part of the state. As of the 2010 census, the population of Clanton was 8,619. The city was founded in 1868, and it was named after James H. Clanton, a Confederate general who fought in the American Civil War. Clanton is located on the central Alabama Black Belt, an area known for its rich soil and agriculture. The city is located near the intersection of U.S. Route 31 and Alabama State Route 22, and it is about 35 miles southwest of Birmingham. Clanton is home to a number of attractions, including the Chilton County Peach Park, which is a popular destination for tourists in the summer months.
