Alexandria is a city in Calhoun County, Alabama, United States. It is part of the Anniston-Oxford Metropolitan Statistical Area. Alexandria is located in the eastern part of the state, about 50 miles east of Birmingham. The city has a population of approximately 10,000 people. Alexandria was founded in 1833 and was named after Alexander the Great. The city was incorporated in 1891. The economy of Alexandria is largely based on agriculture and manufacturing. The city is home to several large industries, including Cargill Meat Solutions, which operates a large meat processing plant in Alexandria. Alexandria has a number of recreational facilities and parks, including the Alexandria Sportsplex, which offers a variety of sports fields and facilities. The city also has a number of local schools, including Alexandria High School and Alexandria Middle School. The city is located in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains and is home to several natural attractions, including the Cheaha State Park and the Talladega National Forest.
