Cherokee is a town in Colbert County, Alabama, United States. It is located in the northwest part of the state, about 10 miles west of Tuscumbia and about 14 miles east of Muscle Shoals. According to the 2010 census, the population of Cherokee was 1,204. Cherokee is part of the Florence-Muscle Shoals metropolitan area, which has a population of approximately 180,000. The town is home to the Cherokee High School Indians, who have a strong tradition in athletics. The area around Cherokee was first settled in the early 1800s, and the town was officially incorporated in 1875. The town was named after the Cherokee Indians, who lived in the area prior to European settlement. Cherokee is located in the northwest corner of Alabama, in the Tennessee Valley region. The town is situated near the Tennessee River and is surrounded by rolling hills and forests. The climate in Cherokee is characterized by hot, humid summers and mild winters. There are several points of interest in Cherokee, including the Cherokee Rock Village, which is a collection of sandstone formations that have been shaped by erosion.
