Chatom is a small town in Washington County, Alabama, United States. It is located in the southwestern part of the state, about 60 miles north of Mobile. As of the 2010 census, the population of Chatom was 1,238. The town was named after Chief Chatom, a leader of the Choctaw Native American tribe who lived in the area. The Choctaw were one of the five tribes that made up the Five Civilized Tribes, so-called because they adopted many European-American ways of life. Chatom is located in a rural area and is known for its timber and agriculture industries. The town has several small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a post office. There are also a number of churches in the area. The town is served by the Washington County School District and has one elementary school and one high school. Chatom is also home to a branch of the Washington County Public Library. In addition to its business and education offerings, Chatom has a number of recreational amenities, including a community center, a playground, and a walking trail. The town also hosts a number of annual events, including a Fourth of July celebration and a Christmas parade.
