Brighton is a city in Jefferson County, Alabama, United States. It is located in the eastern portion of the county, approximately 11 miles east of downtown Birmingham. As of the 2010 Census, the population of Brighton was 2,935. The city is home to the Alabama Wildlife Center, a rehabilitation and education facility for native birds of prey. The Center is located on the grounds of the Oak Mountain State Park and is open to the public. Brighton is also home to the Birmingham Race Course, a thoroughbred horse racing track that hosts live racing and simulcast wagering. The track is open year-round and features a number of race days and special events throughout the year. The city is served by the Jefferson County School System and is home to the Brighton High School Tigers. The city also has a number of churches, a public library, and a number of small businesses. Brighton is located in the Birmingham metropolitan area and is part of the Birmingham-Hoover-Talladega Combined Statistical Area. The city is easily accessible from downtown Birmingham and other surrounding areas via major roads and highways, including I-20 and US-78.
