Thonotosassa is an unincorporated community located in Hillsborough County, Florida, United States. It is situated about 17 miles northeast of Tampa and is part of the Tampa-St. Petersburg-Clearwater Metropolitan Statistical Area. Thonotosassa has a rich history dating back to the 19th century, when it was originally settled by Native American tribes such as the Seminole and the Creek. The name "Thonotosassa" is believed to be derived from the Seminole word "thonotoosah," which means "place of the flint."
