Akron is a small town located in Hale County, Alabama, United States. According to the 2010 United States Census, the population of Akron was 1,547. Akron is located in the Black Belt region of Alabama, an area known for its rich, fertile soil and history of cotton production. The town is situated about 35 miles west of Tuscaloosa and about 90 miles southwest of Birmingham. Akron was founded in the late 19th century and was named after Akron, Ohio. The town was incorporated in 1906. There are a few notable landmarks in Akron, including the First United Methodist Church, which was built in 1911, and the Akron Civic Center, which was built in the 1930s and serves as a community center and venue for events and meetings. The economy of Akron is based largely on agriculture, with cotton being the primary crop. The town is also home to a number of small businesses, including a grocery store, a gas station, and a bank.
