Bayou La Batre is a town in Mobile County, Alabama, United States. It is located along the Gulf of Mexico, about 15 miles (24 kilometers) south of downtown Mobile. The town has a population of about 2,500 people and is known for its seafood industry, with many local residents working in the shrimping, crabbing, and oyster harvesting businesses. Bayou La Batre is also home to the Alabama State Docks, a major shipping port for the region. The town has a number of seafood processing plants, as well as boat builders and other businesses related to the fishing industry. Bayou La Batre is situated on the eastern shore of the Mississippi River Delta, and the area is prone to hurricanes and tropical storms. The town was hit hard by Hurricane Katrina in 2005, but has since recovered and rebuilt.
