Whittier is a city located in Los Angeles County, California, United States. It is approximately 12 miles southeast of downtown Los Angeles and covers an area of 14.8 square miles. As of the 2020 United States Census, the city had a population of 85,645. Whittier was founded in 1887 by a group of Quakers who named it after the poet John Greenleaf Whittier. It was initially a small agricultural community, but it grew rapidly during the 20th century and became a major center for industry and commerce.
