Stanford, California is a small town located in Santa Clara County, in the heart of Silicon Valley. It is perhaps best known as the home of Stanford University, one of the most prestigious universities in the world. History: Stanford was founded in 1885 by Leland Stanford, a railroad magnate and former Governor of California, and his wife, Jane Stanford. The couple founded the university in memory of their son, who died of typhoid fever at the age of 15. The university quickly grew to become one of the leading institutions of higher learning in the world.
