The area was first inhabited by the Kawaiisu Native Americans, who lived in the region for thousands of years before the arrival of European settlers. In the mid-19th century, gold was discovered in the area, which led to a small mining boom. However, the boom was short-lived, and the population of the area dwindled over time.
