Shoshone is a small unincorporated community located in Inyo County, California, in the United States. The community is situated in the southeastern corner of California, close to the Nevada border. It is located about 70 miles southwest of Las Vegas, Nevada, and about 30 miles north of Baker, California, on State Route 127. The community of Shoshone was founded in 1910 as a company town for the Pacific Coast Borax Company, which was extracting borax from the nearby mines. The town was named after the Shoshone Indians, who inhabited the area for centuries. At its peak, the town had a population of around 700 people and boasted a school, a post office, a hotel, a movie theater, a church, and several businesses.
