Attalla is a city in Etowah County, Alabama, United States. It is located in the northeastern part of the state, about 50 miles northeast of Birmingham. As of the 2010 census, the population of Attalla was 6,048. Attalla was founded in 1872 and was named after the Cherokee chief Attalla. The city was incorporated in 1891. Attalla is known for its historic downtown district, which includes the Attalla Hardware Company Building and the First National Bank Building, both of which are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The economy of Attalla is diverse, with a mix of manufacturing, retail, and service industries. The city is home to several small businesses, as well as a number of larger companies, including a furniture manufacturer and a pet food plant. Attalla is located in the Appalachian Mountains and is surrounded by beautiful natural scenery, with the Talladega National Forest and the Coosa River nearby. The city is home to a number of recreational facilities, including a public park and a golf course. Attalla is served by the Etowah County School District, which operates several schools in the city, including Attalla Elementary School, Etowah Middle School, and Etowah High School. The city is also home to Gadsden State Community College, a two-year institution that offers a variety of associate degree programs.
