Shafter is a city located in Kern County, California, in the southern part of the San Joaquin Valley. It is situated approximately 18 miles northwest of Bakersfield, the county seat of Kern County. The city is named after General William Rufus Shafter, a military leader in the Spanish-American War. History: Shafter was established in 1898 as a railroad town for the Santa Fe Railway. The town was created to serve as a shipping point for local agriculture, particularly the growing of potatoes. Shafter was incorporated as a city in 1938.
