San Mateo is a city located in San Mateo County, California, United States. It is situated on the San Francisco Peninsula and has a population of approximately 105,000 people as of 2021. History: San Mateo was originally inhabited by the Ohlone Native American people before Spanish explorers arrived in the late 18th century. The area was then settled by Spanish missionaries and became part of the larger Rancho de las Pulgas land grant. In the mid-19th century, San Mateo became a popular location for wealthy San Franciscans to build vacation homes. The city continued to grow over the years and became an important transportation hub, with the first transcontinental railroad running through the city in the late 1800s.
