Rail Road Flat is a small unincorporated community located in Calaveras County, California, United States. It is situated in the Sierra Nevada foothills, about 24 miles southeast of Jackson, the county seat. The community is part of the Sacramento–Arden-Arcade–Roseville Metropolitan Statistical Area. Rail Road Flat has a rich history that dates back to the Gold Rush era of California. The town was founded in the 1840s as a stopping point for travelers between Sacramento and the gold mines of the Sierra Nevada. The name "Rail Road Flat" was adopted in the 1860s, after a railroad was built through the area.
