Portola Hills is a community located in the foothills of the Santa Ana Mountains in Orange County, California, United States. It is situated approximately 8 miles east of Irvine and 10 miles northeast of Mission Viejo. The community is bordered by the cities of Foothill Ranch, Lake Forest, Trabuco Canyon, Rancho Santa Margarita, and the Cleveland National Forest. Portola Hills is a relatively new community, having been developed in the 1990s. The area was previously used for cattle grazing and was later purchased by the Irvine Company for development. The community was named after Gaspar de Portolá, a Spanish explorer who led the first land expedition from San Diego to Monterey in 1769.
