Portola is a city located in Plumas County, California, United States. It is situated in the northeastern part of the state, near the border with Nevada. The city was named after Gaspar de Portolá, a Spanish explorer who led the first European expedition to the San Francisco Bay Area in 1769. History: The area that is now Portola was originally inhabited by the Maidu people. In the mid-19th century, gold was discovered in the nearby mountains, leading to an influx of miners and settlers. The town was officially founded in 1909 as a stop on the Western Pacific Railroad.
