Porterville is a city located in Tulare County, California, United States. It is situated in the San Joaquin Valley, approximately 165 miles southeast of San Francisco and 150 miles north of Los Angeles. The city covers an area of approximately 17.3 square miles and has a population of around 60,000 people. The city was founded in 1864 and was named after Nathaniel Porter, a founder of the city. Porterville was initially a small farming community, but it grew rapidly in the early 20th century due to the discovery of oil in the nearby Kern River oil field.
