Placerville is a city located in El Dorado County, California, in the Sierra Nevada foothills. It is approximately 45 miles east of Sacramento, the state capital. Here are some key facts and information about Placerville: History: Placerville was founded in 1848 during the California Gold Rush. It was originally known as "Dry Diggins" because of the dry mining techniques used by early gold miners. The town was renamed "Hangtown" in 1854 after a number of high-profile hangings took place in the area. The name was changed to Placerville in 1854, reflecting the importance of placer mining in the area. Population: As of the 2020 Census, Placerville had a population of approximately 10,000 people.
