Pittsburg is a city located in Contra Costa County, California, United States. It is situated in the East Bay region of the San Francisco Bay Area, approximately 40 miles northeast of San Francisco. History: The area now known as Pittsburg was originally inhabited by the Miwok Native American tribe. The first European settlement in the area was established in 1839, when John Marsh built a ranch on the site. The town of New York of the Pacific was established in 1849, but was later renamed Black Diamond, after the coal mining industry that was established in the area. The town was incorporated as the City of Pittsburg in 1903.
