Palo Verde is a census-designated place (CDP) located in Imperial County, California, United States. The community is situated in the southeastern part of the state, near the Colorado River, and is about 50 miles east of the city of El Centro. As of the 2020 census, the population of Palo Verde was 129. The community is primarily residential, with most of its residents employed in nearby agricultural or industrial operations. Palo Verde is known for its proximity to the Palo Verde Ecological Reserve, which is a 1,400-acre protected area that is home to a variety of native wildlife, including desert bighorn sheep, mule deer, and coyotes. The reserve is also home to the Palo Verde Marsh, which is a popular birdwatching destination and a stopover for migratory waterfowl.
