Athens is a city in Limestone County, Alabama, United States. It is the county seat and largest city in Limestone County, and the principal city of the Athens Micropolitan Statistical Area, which includes all of Limestone County. Athens is located in northern Alabama, approximately 30 miles west of Huntsville and approximately 15 miles east of the Tennessee border. It is situated in the rolling hills of the Tennessee Valley and is home to a number of historical landmarks and points of interest. The city has a population of around 24,000 people and is known for its friendly, small-town atmosphere. It is home to a number of parks and outdoor recreational areas, including Athens Sportsplex and Athens-Limestone County Library. The city is also home to several educational institutions, including Athens State University, a four-year public university, and Calhoun Community College, a two-year community college.
