Onyx is a small unincorporated community located in Kern County, California, in the United States. The community is situated in the southern Sierra Nevada mountains and is part of the Kern River Valley region. History: Onyx was founded in the late 1800s as a mining town. The town was named after the onyx marble that was mined in the area. In the early 1900s, the mining industry began to decline, and Onyx transitioned to agriculture and ranching. Today, Onyx is a quiet community with a population of around 500 people.
