Occidental is a small town located in Sonoma County, California, United States. It is located about 13 miles west of Santa Rosa, the county seat of Sonoma County. The town is situated on the western slope of the Sonoma Mountains, and it is surrounded by redwood forests, vineyards, and farmland. Occidental was founded in 1876 as a railroad stop for the North Pacific Coast Railroad. The town was originally known as "Dutch Bill" after a local creek, but the name was changed to Occidental in 1876, which means "western" in Latin.
