North Highlands is a census-designated place located in Sacramento County, California, United States. It is situated north of the city of Sacramento and east of the Sacramento River. History: North Highlands was originally known as Foothill Farms, a name that was given to the area due to its location at the base of the Sierra Nevada foothills. The community was primarily a rural area until the 1950s when it began to experience significant growth. In 1995, the community changed its name to North Highlands in an effort to distinguish itself from the neighboring community of Foothill Farms. Population: As of the 2020 census, North Highlands had a population of approximately 43,000 people. The community is diverse, with a mix of African American, Hispanic, and Caucasian residents.
