Murrieta is a city located in southwestern Riverside County, California, in the United States. The city is part of the Temecula Valley and is located approximately 100 miles southeast of Los Angeles and 50 miles north of San Diego. History: The area where Murrieta is now located was originally inhabited by the Luiseño Native Americans. In the 1700s, Spanish explorers arrived in the area, and the land was eventually granted to a Spanish soldier named Juan Murrieta in the early 1800s. In 1873, a village was established on the land by a group of Southern Pacific Railroad executives, and it was named after Juan Murrieta.
