Markleeville is a small town located in Alpine County, California, United States. It is situated in the eastern Sierra Nevada mountain range, about 30 miles south of Lake Tahoe. The town was named after Jacob Markley, a pioneer who established a trading post in the area in the 1860s. It was originally a mining town, but the industry declined in the late 1800s, and the town became a center for ranching and lumber. Today, Markleeville has a population of around 200 people, and it is known for its scenic beauty and outdoor recreational opportunities. The town is surrounded by the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest, which offers hiking, camping, fishing, and hunting. The nearby Carson River is a popular spot for fishing and rafting, and there are several hot springs in the area.
