Magalia is a census-designated place (CDP) located in Butte County, California, United States. It is situated in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada mountain range, about 16 miles northeast of the city of Chico. Magalia has a population of around 11,000 people, according to the United States Census Bureau. Magalia was originally settled by the Maidu Native Americans, who lived in the area for thousands of years before the arrival of European settlers. The town was founded in the late 1800s as a logging camp, and it remained a center of the timber industry for many years. The name "Magalia" is said to have been derived from the Latin word "magalia," which means "huts" or "shelters."
