Lower Lake is a small town located in Lake County, California, in the United States. It is situated at the southern end of Clear Lake, which is the largest freshwater lake entirely in California. The town has a population of around 1,200 people and covers an area of approximately 1.8 square miles. Lower Lake was founded in the mid-19th century as a stagecoach stop along the route between San Francisco and Clear Lake. It was originally named Grantville, after Ulysses S. Grant, who had recently become famous as a Union general during the American Civil War. The town was later renamed Lower Lake to avoid confusion with another Grantville in California.
