It is situated approximately 23 miles southeast of downtown Los Angeles and has a population of around 80,000 people as of the 2020 census. The city covers an area of approximately 9 square miles and is surrounded by the cities of Long Beach, Bellflower, Cerritos, and Paramount. Lakewood was originally developed in the 1950s as a planned community and was one of the first post-World War II housing developments in the United States. It was designed to be an affordable and desirable place to live for young families, with tree-lined streets, parks, and easy access to schools, shopping, and other amenities.
