Inyokern is a census-designated place (CDP) located in the Indian Wells Valley of Kern County, California, United States. The town is situated about 8 miles west of Ridgecrest and is located at the intersection of Highway 395 and Highway 178. As of the 2020 census, the population of Inyokern was 992. Inyokern was originally founded as a railroad town in the late 1800s, and its name comes from the Native American words for "place of plenty water". During World War II, Inyokern played an important role as a training base for pilots and ground crews of the United States Army Air Forces. Today, the town serves as a hub for aviation-related businesses and a gateway to the nearby Naval Air Weapons Station China Lake.
