Independence is a small census-designated place located in the Owens Valley of eastern California, United States. It is situated in Inyo County and is the county seat. As of the 2020 census, the population of Independence was 574. History: Independence was founded in 1861 as a mining town during the California Gold Rush. The town was named after the Declaration of Independence and became the seat of Inyo County in 1870. During the early 20th century, Independence served as a transportation hub for mining, lumber, and agriculture industries. In 1942, it was the site of the Manzanar War Relocation Center, where Japanese Americans were interned during World War II.
