It is situated in the San Joaquin Valley, approximately 13 miles west of Merced and 6 miles north of Turlock. According to the 2020 U.S. Census, Hilmar-Irwin has a population of 6,890. The community of Hilmar-Irwin is made up of two smaller communities, Hilmar and Irwin, that are located adjacent to each other. The two communities share a common school district, the Hilmar Unified School District, which serves students in pre-kindergarten through 12th grade. There are also several private and charter schools in the area.
