Gold River is a census-designated place (CDP) located in Sacramento County, California, in the United States. It is situated east of the city of Sacramento and west of Folsom, along the American River. History: Gold River was originally developed as a planned community in the early 1970s. The land was previously owned by the Rancho Cordova land grant, and in the 1950s and 1960s, the area was primarily used for farming and ranching. In the early 1970s, the Howard Hughes Corporation purchased the land and began developing it into a residential community. The first homes were sold in 1978, and the community was named Gold River after the nearby American River.
