situated in a valley, surrounded by mountains and located about 15 miles east of downtown San Diego. El Cajon has a rich history and was originally inhabited by the Kumeyaay people. It was then settled by Spanish missionaries in the 18th century and later became part of Mexico. In 1850, California became a state and El Cajon became part of San Diego County.
