Colma is a small town located in San Mateo County, California, United States. With a population of just over 1,500 people, it is known for its large number of cemeteries relative to its small size and is often referred to as the "City of Souls". Originally, Colma was settled as a necropolis, or city of the dead, in the late 19th century when San Francisco prohibited new cemeteries due to concerns about public health. Many existing cemeteries in San Francisco were forced to relocate their interments to Colma, which eventually led to it becoming the final resting place for over 1.5 million people.
