It is located near the eastern edge of the San Francisco Bay Area, about 20 miles east of Oakland and 40 miles east of San Francisco. The town is primarily a rural community and is known for its rolling hills, scenic views, and historic downtown area. Agriculture is a major industry in the area, with crops such as almonds, walnuts, and grapes being grown. The Byron Hot Springs, once a popular resort destination, is located just outside of town.
